Great episode of Boston Legal Sunday night. All the repulsive McBealities were gone in favor of James Spader leading the episode in a display of sleaze that makes this series unique, compelling, and simply movie screen powerful. Again, Rene Auberjonois was superb. My readers tend to focus on actors like Lark Bell, but this is all about Spader, Shatner and Auberjonois...and the wonderful Larry Miller. Everyone else is replaceable. I last saw Larry at our internist's office a few months ago, and he smiled like the cat that ate the canary. Now I know why. His performance about the mentally disturbed senior partner who strolls out of the hospital and into the courtroom to take a case was a nuanced, exceptional guest star, Emmy worthy. All Shatner had to do this week was say "Denny Crane" twice to win my heart. Will we ever forget that hook?
What happened? I swear ABC must have dropped a few episodes in the can and run a newie with the botox needles and lunatic girlfriend written out. They'll never save the show in the time period, as I'm sure the ratings I show you in a couple of days will reveal. But tonight's show was a winner, a class act. God bless Spader, Shatner and Auberjonois.
